Limited-Edition "Ghost in the Shell" Collectible Figures

To mark the release of Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Pictures’ highly anticipated live-action film Ghost in the Shell, Weta Workshop, the award-winning creative design and practical effects facility, has launched two stunning limited-edition collectible figures: Major, the lead character and the beautiful but deadly Geisha.  These impressively detailed statues mark the first time the Workshop has made the foray into mixed media collectibles, also expanding the direction for the Workshop’s consumer products team.

Ghost in the Shell stars Scarlett Johansson as Major in the film, which hits theaters this month. In the near future, Major is the first of her kind:  A human saved from a terrible crash, who is cyber-enhanced to be a perfect soldier devoted to stopping the world’s most dangerous criminals. When terrorism reaches a new level that includes the ability to hack into people’s minds and control them, Major is uniquely qualified to stop it.   As she prepares to face a new enemy, Major discovers that she has been lied to: her life was not saved, it was stolen. She will stop at nothing to recover her past, find out who did this to her, and stop them before they do it to others.

Weta Workshop also contributed thousands of creations for the film, including conceptual design, prosthetics, animatronics, specialty costumes, specialty props, and behind-the-scenes content to help bring the film to life on the big screen.  The Ghost in the Shell collectible figures represent a continuation of that body of work.

"Weta Workshop has created two absolutely magnificent collectible figures for Ghost in the Shell," said Bil Bertini, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Licensing for Paramount Pictures.

"Weta's ability to translate their wonderful creative work from the film directly onto these meticulously detailed collectibles will certainly thrill collectors and Ghost in the Shell fans."

-Bil Bertini, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Licensing for Paramount Pictures.

The film’s depiction of Major, and her thermoptic suit, represented a new level for Weta Workshop’s creativity and innovation. Taking digital scans of actress Scarlett Johansson’s character; the Workshop built an extraordinary physical effects suit unlike anything it had attempted before. To craft the collectible version of this iconic science fiction character, the Workshop’s sculptor Mauro Santini had the benefit of working directly with the film’s production and replicating from the original suit designs.

For the Geisha’s collectible figure, the Workshop’s artists Lindsey Crummett and Gary Hunt, were able to closely replicate the distinctive make-up, sculptural wig, and voluminous kimono ensemble portrayed in pivotal action sequences from the film. The statue also features interchangeable heads, showing the clock-like interior of the Geisha’s face and an illuminating collar.

With only 500 units of each, these polystone limited-edition collectible figures stand in unique illuminating bases at an eye-catching 1:4 scale

“These extraordinary collectibles represent a new benchmark for Weta Workshop’s Consumer Products team, and the talented artists and technicians who work with us to bring them to life. They’ve been designed and prototyped right here at the Workshop, utilizing the same designs created for the film. We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to partner with Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Pictures to create two very special pieces of film art and we can’t wait to share them with collectors all over the world,"

-Wilf Robinson, Head of Consumer Products, Weta Workshop.
