One of Wētā Workshop’s creations, Dr Grordborts, gets the classic tabletop Role-Playing Game (TTRPG) treatment thanks to Crowbar Creative and Exalted Funeral, which is out now. Hear from Grordborts creator, Greg Broadmore, on how this project came about.
Dr Grordborts (Dr. G) started 17 years ago when I showed Wētā Workshop co-founder Richard Taylor a series of ray gun paintings I was working on. This was around the time when were starting to develop our own IP. Before we knew it we had crafted a bunch of beautiful metal ray guns collectibles at the workshop. These were incredibly successful, and got featured in a few publications, making it into a few internationals like Wired. That interest spurred on the desire to build out the Dr. G world. From there I worked on four Dr. G books, and a full-scale exhibition which has been touring the world!
“I grew up playing RPGs, and when I created Dr Grordborts it had DNA of a great tabletop roleplaying game built in instinctively. It was something waiting to happen, we just needed to find the right people to do it. Luckily, they found us!" says Greg.
Around three years ago Brian Saliba from Crowbar Creative got in touch with me and thought Dr. G would make a great table top role playing game. We didn’t have the inhouse know-how to do so, but Crowbar had the talent and skills to bring it to life. They’ve made some amazing games that proved to us they knew what they were doing and we could trust them with the Dr. G property. We gave them full access to the huge archives of Gr. G artwork to develop the game, and together with publisher Exalted Funeral Press, they nailed it perfectly.
The Dr. G ruleset is based on Dungeons & Dragons 5E, which is the biggest TTRPG in the world. We’ve even created new artwork for the game, so there are a bunch of new characters for our Dr. G fans to check out.
The game itself features dozens of character options, scores of exotic creatures, and a myriad of weapons, gadgets, and vehicles. This is a maniacally entertaining setting drenched in flavour and satire, yet accessible and easy to play and run.
