James Cameron’s 2022 sci-fi spectacular Avatar: The Way of Water was a welcome return to Pandora for Wētā Workshop. The director’s sequel to 2009’s Avatar sees Jake Sully and his family flee to Awa’atlu, a village of a Na’vi reef clan known as the Metkayina, who have made their home at the water’s edge.
For this exquisitely rendered world, we worked closely with costume designer Deborah Scott to meticulously craft costumes for the Na’vi, and designed and created prototype uniforms for the RDA’s various divisions. We also worked with the incredibly talented art department teams to conceptualise and manufacture a wide range of specialty props, weapons and set prop high-end consoles, make intricate miniatures of parts of Awa’atlu, and provide special effects work for Sarah Rubano, Makeup and Hair HOD.
With thanks to Deborah Scott (Costume Designer), Brad Elliot (Property Master), Melissa Spicer (New Zealand Prop Master), Ben Proctor (Production Designer), Dylan Cole (Production Designer), Luke Freeborn (Supervising Art Director), Kim Sinclair (New Zealand Supervising Art Director), Aashrita Kamath (Art Director), Ben Milsom (Live-Action Art Director), Sarah Rubano (Makeup and Hair HOD), and to the wonderful James Cameron, Jon Landau and Brigitte Yorke.
