A prequel to 2019’s sci-fi blockbuster The Wandering Earth, director Frant Gwo’s second film, The Wandering Earth II, released in 2023, explores humankind’s bid to save Earth from its dying sun. After producing specialty suits equipped with highly technical exoskeletons, domed helmets and specialty backpacks for the first film, this was a thrilling return to Gwo’s interstellar action-adventure for Wētā Workshop. We created one-person submarines for deep-sea exploration in this reimagined future. To achieve this, we created a hero dive suit and backpack, complete with telescoping mechanical ball-jointed limbs, interactive opening chest and helmet, and performance lighting.
