In 2020, Wētā Workshop was approached by the team behind the TV series Invasion to assist in designing its worker-class aliens. A unique and challenging opportunity, we worked closely with VFX producer Matt Robken and VFX supervisor Erik Henry to develop a creature unlike anything on this planet.
Bioengineered to terraform our Earth, the worker aliens of Invasion secrete spores that are black and corrosive. As the creative team wanted to stay away from a spore delivery method that was too horrific, we explored the idea of a tar-like substance that the alien ‘painted’ on surfaces. Once applied, the tiny spores get to work, duplicating and spreading to create a vast network, like a root system.
