The Lord of The Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) was the landmark film project that firmly placed Wētā Workshop on the world stage. The immense efforts from our crew were recognised with multiple international accolades, including Richard Taylor’s first Academy Award for Best Makeup, as well as winning British Academy of Film & TV Award for Best Costume Design, and Saturn Awards for Best Costume and Best Make-up.
Director Peter Jackson’s epic high-fantasy film follows nine companions of Middle-earth as they set off for their perilous journey to Mount Doom. Based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s beloved tale, the film captivated the hearts and minds of audiences worldwide.
Elven ears, Hobbit feet and Dwarven noses were just a few of the tens of thousands of pieces we created for the film. Wētā Workshop designed and built armour, specialty costumes, prosthetics, miniatures and weapons for the epic three-film series which was shot in breath-taking locations across New Zealand.
