For the 2015 film Chappie, director Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Elysium) explored the question of nature versus nurture packaged up in an action-filled dystopian sci-fi flick. Wētā Workshop designed and built the lead character — a decommissioned police robot called Chappie — as well as his nemesis, a lethal security robot known as MOOSE. Our work included an army of police robots as well as different versions of Chappie for different scenes in the film, as well as a tonne of tech including weaponry and armour. MOOSE was fully realised both as an animated asset and as a fully functional, life-sized prop.
