Salvation at Mount Doom
As one of the largest and most intricate pieces ever created, Masters Collection: Salvation at Mount Doom completes our trilogy of 20th-anniversary statues. This formidable piece captures the scale and detail needed to immortalize the climactic end of Frodo’s journey in The Return of the King.
Gary Hunt, a sculptor and expert in Middle-earth’s creatures, led the project, bringing an eagle to life with lifelike, hand-sculpted feathers. Utilizing a variety of reference materials, from comprehensive feather maps to a (safely acquired) taxidermy falcon, Gary initially created approximately 40 individually sculpted feathers as a base. Then from that base set, he re-sized, bent, curled, rippled, notched, and split each and every single feather, considering weight, speed, updraft, motion, and placement.
The result is a stunning recreation of the Eagle’s rescue at Mount Doom, a powerful moment where every feather, talon and wingbeat seems poised in flight. Spanning meters in wingspan, the statue stands as a testament to Wētā Workshop’s ability to overcome challenges and achieve the breathtaking realism and scale demanded by the Masters Collection.

The Dead Marshes
For the 20th anniversary of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Masters Collection: The Dead Marshes brings to life one of the most haunting moments in Frodo’s journey, where the magical and the mundane collide. Far from home and safety, Frodo, Sam and Gollum confront the eerie undead, lurking just below the water’s surface. This statue captures that exact instant of peril, as Gollum and Sam reach out to save a sinking Frodo while ghostly wraiths claw at him from below.
To achieve this striking duality, Wētā Workshop artists utilized every creative tool available, experimenting with intricate lighting, translucent materials, and detailed paintwork that push collectible artistry to new heights. The Dead Marshes invites exploration, drawing viewers into an unforgettable, immersive snapshot of Middle-earth’s tension-filled, shadowed depths.

Escape off the Road
To commemorate the 20th anniversary of The Fellowship of the Ring, senior sculptors Brigitte Wuest and Gary Hunt recreated one of the film’s most suspenseful scenes, the Hobbits’ encounter with a Ringwraith. With over 3,000 hours invested in the creation of this statue, every element has been painstakingly crafted to reflect the original scene’s intense atmosphere. From the flora and fauna to the Ringwraith’s fearsome visage, each feature has been sculpted, cast, and painted with the utmost care.
Drawing inspiration from the filming location on Mount Victoria, Wellington, this piece includes subtle, accurate details like individual leaves, branches, and the distinct textures of each Hobbit’s clothing, making it a breathtaking tribute to the artistry and storytelling of Wētā Workshop.

Thranduil, the Woodland King
The statue was brought to life through the combined talents of Wētā Workshop’s technicians, craftspeople, and collectibles development team, who were able to draw on rich reference material: the actual costume from the film; concept art; and photographs from set.
“Everything was incredibly well documented,” says collectibles art director Daniel Falconer. To support and enhance the cohesion of the piece, Steven followed the sculpture through each stage of the creative process, from digital modelling, sculpting and model-making, right through to molding, casting, and painting.
The rich detail was achieved through a combination of digital and physical sculpting. Once the form was 3D printed, Steven applied a base layer of clay and worked methodically to capture a range of textures by hand. The resultant statue is one of great contrast; of surfaces rough and matte; smooth and glossy. Flattened staircase slabs and intricate fallen foliage. Above it all, the curling antlers of the Elven throne, half-carved, half-grown, with the King himself sitting in autumnal fabric, majestic.

Gandalf and Frodo
Sculpted by Steven Saunders, Masters Collection: Gandalf and Frodo reimagines an iconic scene with remarkable fidelity and plenty of hidden treasures for keen-eyed collectors. Guided by set drawings and original blueprints from the film trilogy, Saunders digitally overlaid his sculpting work on the design, ensuring absolute authenticity to the moment where Gandalf and Frodo spark the embers of their fateful journey.
Model-makers David Tremont and Leonard Ellis meticulously enhanced the texture of Gandalf’s cart and recreated each firework with precise detail, even going beyond the film’s visuals to incorporate never-before-seen conceptual art from The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. Every element — from Gandalf’s expressive face to the intricate contents of his cart — captures the magic and history of Middle-earth.

Treebeard
A marvel in both height and craftsmanship, the Masters Collection: Treebeard statue took four years and over 2,800 hours to develop. Standing over three feet tall, Treebeard is Wētā Workshop’s largest 1:6 scale piece. Senior concept designer Daniel Falconer, who originally helped bring Treebeard to life on screen, led this ambitious project. Sculpted by artist Troy Nickel, the statue captures Treebeard’s ancient and towering presence, making it both a tribute to the character and a technical feat of artistry.
First revealed at San Diego Comic-Con, Treebeard was met with awe by both collectors and fine art enthusiasts, selling out in just under 45 minutes, cementing its place as one of the Masters Collection’s most celebrated releases.

Gollum
The inaugural offering for the Masters Collection, Gollum took over two and a half years to develop, under the expert hand of Wētā Workshop master sculptor Jamie Beswarick, a veteran of more than 20 years with our team. This 1:3 scale Gollum statue is the first of its kind, featuring hand-placed natural hair and translucent skin to give the figure an almost haunting realism. Clad in real leather cloth and perched on a stone base, Gollum gazes fixedly at the One Ring, which lies motionless in water-effect resin, capturing a poignant and undisturbed moment.
This limited-edition release, capped at 589 statues, commemorates each year of Gollum’s life in Middle-earth — a lifetime consumed by obsession, captured in one statue that honours the character’s haunting legacy.
